When I was 16, I drove an automatic CTS-V sedan

I had zero experience with enthusiast cars. The fastest car I’d driven at that point had been a Ford Probe. The CTS-V? It blew my mind. Ever since, I’ve lusted after these, but now it’s the coupes and wagons that really rev my engine. Look at this beastly thing. Aggressive, but not angry. Angular, but not overdone.

It’s a masterpiece. As close to a batmobile as you can get. I’ll even forgive it the tinted taillights, because it just works.

The sedans are a bit bland, and t he wagons sell for twice the price of a high mileage NSX. The coupes though..? The coupes are attainable. The coupes are stylish. The coupes are 100% unique.

Someday...

Loved them. And loved watching them in the Pirelli Cup too. They were beastly!

The first car that I drove that I thought was “astoundingly fun” was a 2008  Mazda 3 in about 2010. Compared to my janky 1999 Honda Civic, that Mazda was a damn rocketship and so modern and nice. Reconfirmed my love of the Mazda 3 when I autocrossed a 2016 model. Sure it wasnt as nimble as my Miata but it sure beat the other time that I autocrossed a Chevy Malibu!!

My single Mazda 3 experience wasn’t very good :/

Apparently I had the worst engine/chassis combo, but still. Yikes. I’d love to try a new one!

Haha I mean the new one is definitely leagues and leagues better. It was one of those “only car we have left” at the local Enterprise and it had a million extra features I didnt need and leather and clearly the best package available. I was able to beat the other Mazda 3 and my codriver and the tires screamed bloody murder the entire day. I averaged 10MPG for the day according to the car and my calculations. It was excellent!

I think driving someone else’s car versus a rental also paints a different picture. Especially a rental with the sole purpose of hooning the shit out of it. I’d imagine in that situation you didnt want to be Ken Block unless she was into that lol. And my perception of the older model was definitely whack as well. That Honda it was compared to would stall at idle if the AC was for too long because it would run out of power. And there was plenty of oil in the coolant. And it was a 4 speed auto that slipped sometimes. So the Mazda 3 felt like a major upgrade lol. And being a rental, I also had the tires screeching around every turn even though it was entirely street driving.

I echo your CTS-V lust. I had a first gen with the LS6, man what a fun car. Then I test drove a second gen and was super impressed. So docile 90% of the time, but if you dip the throttle pedal, man what a car. I can’t imagine the gen 3s, but they would be fun too.

Someday....  when the depreciation curve reaches my available funds for a toy car...  that or a Z06.
